Lately, I’ve been experimenting with makeup, and learning more and more about different concealers and foundations, and how to use them. I know, I know…I’m waaaaaayyyy behind the curve. People are out here contouring a whole new face for themselves, and I’m just getting the hang of foundation! 😩 But as I shared here, I’ve been blessed with good skin, so I’ve always gotten away with just using eye makeup, and a swipe of a good lipstick. As I get older, I am realizing the benefit of a good foundation to add a luminous look to skin, and the magic of concealers, and powders for covering up dark spots, and blurring pores and lines!
I recently received a complimentary bottle of Covergirl Vitalist Healthy Elixir Foundation in shade Tawny for my review. You guys have seen enough pictures of me to know I’m not anywhere near Tawny in skin color, so I will not be posting photos of myself wearing this product! What I will do is give you my unbiased opinion, and Socialite rating!
Cover Girl Vitalist Healthy Elixir Foundation is billed as being a “hydrating, vitamin infused formula with a special antioxidant and vitamin complex” to benefit skin. Also has SPF. Now…on to my review!
–Great Bottle! The pump is easy to use and the product comes out smoothly. You get a good amount of foundation per pump, and I was able to cover my entire face with one pump worth. For reference, I use a Beauty Blender to apply to my face, and the mini foundation brush pictured below (for under my eyes)
–Good Texture: This product has a really good consistency. I’ve tried some products in the past that were very runny (MAC) and some that had a whipped texture that I didn’t really care for. Cover Girl Vitalist foundation has good “body” to it, but feels weightless when applied.
–Great Coverage: Even though this product was not the right shade for my skin tone, I could still see that it provides good coverage. I have dark circles under my nose, and large pores on my nose, and I felt that this product provided full coverage for my problem areas!
–Lack of Glow: This product isn’t billed as a matte foundation, but it kinda looks like one. I didn’t get the dewy effect that I love with this product. In all fairness I will say that because the bottle I tested was not the correct shade, it may have affected the look of the product on my skin.
–Lack of shade selection: Per the official Cover Girl website, there are 11 shades to choose from for fairer skin tones, and 3 shades for darker skin. I have to say that this is a huge disappointment for me. There are other drugstore brands that have taken into consideration, not only the fact that there has to be more variety for darker skin tones, but also that people of color have unique undertones that can affect how foundation looks when applied to the skin (see:L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup )
All in all, I was pretty satisfied with this product, wrong shade and all, as it does what it’s supposed to do, which is to provide good, even coverage, and the price point is very good, and on the lower end of the spectrum for drugstore brands. I’m going to have the subtract a few points for the poor shade selection…that was a huge buzzkill. I also didn’t find the product to be as moisturizing as described, but maybe the skincare benefits come with continued use. Socialite Rating: 6.0/10
While we’re on the subject of drugstore brands, I wanted to share an amazing powder I found at CVS! Not going to do a full review on this one, but trust…this NYX #No Filter Finishing Powder blurs my pores, smooths out imperfections and was less than $10!!!! I honestly have no need for foundation with this product, and it controls shine!
See you next time!
