Step One: Inspiration

For many people the most fun part of any decoration project, apart from the end result, is when they get to allow their imaginations fly free. I am, of course, talking about finding inspiration for your kitchen.  This is something that you shouldn’t have too much of a problem doing, as there are many sources available including home decor magazines, as well as websites, blogs, and social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest.

In fact, by using Pinterest, you can even create a mood board where you can display all the different elements of your kitchen inspiration together in one place. Something that can be very useful to refer back to as you complete your kitchen makeover.

Step Two: Color Scheme

Once you have collected some inspiration for your kitchen makeover, it’s time to narrow things down a bit, so you can get started. In particular, I believe that choosing the colors you will use in your kitchen refresh is an essential part of this.

Of course, the shades you will pick need to work well with the amount of available light you have in your kitchen. After all, a room with little natural light may not be best served by dark hues on the wall or cabinets. And once you’ve got the darker shades you’re looking for for those cabinets, you can use cabinet painting services to get the job done quickly. In fact, if you are looking to make your room like lighter, larger, and airier picking white and brighter colors is always a good bet.

Remember too that when it comes to color, the trend at the moment is less for complementary shades, those that sit opposite each other on the color wheel, and more for analogous ones. What that means is instead of going for a pale blue kitchen with pink accents you may choose shades in the orange and pink families instead. It may seem scary to work with contrasting colors, but I assure you, you’ll be on trend!

Step Three: Layout

The third stage of your kitchen remodel process is deciding on the layout of the room. Of course, it is nearly always cheaper to keep the current one the way that it is and just replace the assets around it. However, a kitchen makeover isn’t only a time to beautify your space, but also to make sure that it works as effectively as possible for your household as well.

To that end, it can be a smart idea to consider changing the position out of the fixtures and fittings that require plumbing as well as the layout of your cabinets and shelves at this time.

Step Four: Cabinets

Step four is all about one of the most essential features in your kitchen, your cabinets. In fact, the success of your kitchen makeover can live or die on your choice of cabinets alone! Of course, in an ideal world, you would have the funds to replace at least the doors if not the entire layout and structure to match precisely the style that you want. However, as this is not a perfect world, and most of us are governed by budgets, it’s essential to consider some other options as well.

Luckily, there are alternatives such as painting white cabinets another color, so they better fit in with your kitchen design. Of course, you are more than welcome to have a go at this yourself, but because of the tricky nature of this task that includes removing the doors, covering them despite many having a protective coating, and refitting them, so they all hang straight, many people choose to use a professional for this job instead.

Step Five: Fixtures and Fittings

Details do matter when it comes to your kitchen makeover, even the small ones. In fact, if you want to achieve the most cohesive overall look, then it’s a good idea to think about minor details like the type of taps you will have on the sink, as well as the pulls for the draws and cupboards.

Of course, you can integrate some additional functionality into your kitchen during this stage too, perhaps with a spray or boiling water tap, or pot fillers behind the stove!  Any changes you make should be directed toward making your time in the kitchen more comfortable and more productive.

Step Six: Appliances

We do love our appliances in the kitchen these days whether it be the more basic item like microwaves and refrigerators or additional luxuries like coffee machines and wine fridges. Luckily, a kitchen makeover is the perfect time to update such pieces.

Of course, when it comes to the larger pieces, its a smart idea to either get one’s finished in the same color, so they provide a cohesive aesthetic, or to use a built-in variety. The latter being appliances that you can cover with cabinet doors that match the rest of your kitchen, and so will not only be super functional but will help boost the room’s aesthetics as well.

Step Seven: Decorative Features

Gone are the days where a kitchen is only a place for practical things. In fact, many contemporary kitchen’s have decorative features now as well. One that can work particularly well is layering different light fitting at different levels, as well as using decorative shades, especially over seating areas.

Alternatively, many people are now using framed prints and canvases on the walls, even in a gallery formation to bring color and texture to one of the most function rooms in their home.

Oh, and don’t forget that if you invest in copper cookware, you can kill two birds with one stone! The reason being that not only will these look fantastic when on display, but will also do a pretty good job when it comes to cooking dinner as well.
