Inventions That Were Created Way Before You May Have Thought

When we glance around our homes, we are surrounded by so many incredible things!  If you stop and look around, you will probably find that the vast majority of the items in your location are creations of the last decade or so. Well, what may be even more surprising is that you may be surrounded by some items that you believe are quite modern, but in fact, may be older than you think.

Today, we are going to be looking at some of the creations you possibly have in your home that are quite possibly a lot older than you may have thought.

The Lighter

Ok, so the first thing we are going to address here is that yes, the lighter was invented before the match. While some people try to disagree with this fact, what people think was the match from China in the year 577 was, in fact, a fuel soaked stick and, therefore a torch ,not a match.

Anyway, this section is about the lighter, and you may be surprised to find that the lighter was first created in the 16th century. The original lighter was fashioned from a converted flintlock pistol and indeed fits the exact definition of what a lighter is.

So next time somebody tells you that the match came first, remind them that a match must be rubbed against a surface to ignite and the first match didn’t come until 1826.

The Ceiling Fan

While the humble ceiling fan didn’t really start to find much ground until the 1970s, it may surprise you to learn that by this time, they had already been around for a long time.

What generally comes as a surprise to most is that the ceiling fan was created way back in 1882 by Philip Diehl. To put this in perspective, it only took 56 years to go from the creation of a match to an electric-powered ceiling fan.

While the early models are not a scratch on some of the amazing designs you can see at places like the Palm Fan Store, they were very much fit for purpose and an incredible invention.

The Video

This one is going to be one of those things that catches a lot of people by surprise, but despite the television being invented in 1927 and the first film being shown publicly in 1905, the video came a few years earlier than this.

Now, while a lot of people would like you to believe that Thomas Edison was the father of the moving picture, the truth is that this is a lie. In fact, the first moving picture was created by a remarkable Frenchman by the name of Louis Le Prince in 1888.

What’s even more remarkable is that you can watch this incredible piece of history known as the Roundhay Garden Scene, and while it only lasts a few seconds, when you think about it, it’s one of the most remarkable feats of all time.
