Moving Home? Tips To Help You Declutter Before The Big Day

You don’t need us to tell you how stressful moving home can be, especially when you are getting ready for the big day itself. For all we know, you are probably up to your eyeballs in packing boxes and sticky tape already as you’re trying to sort out your belongings.

It can be a bit of a nightmare, but that is why you need to declutter your home before the move.

When it comes to moving, the important thing is to simplify the moving process. After reducing your belongings, you will have less to worry about when trying to cram everything into your boxes, and you will have less to unpack when you move into your new home. You will save yourself money too; as the less stuff you have, the cheaper your moving costs should be. One of the best ways to save a lot of cash is by shopping around for moving quotes, so you get the one that has all the services you need at a price that works for you. Moving is already costly, so getting quotes is worth the effort.

With that in mind, here are some decluttering tips to help you.

Start early

If you have a lot of stuff to sort through, don’t procrastinate. The sooner you get started, the sooner you will get it finished, so set a day to declutter, and then stick to it.

Decide what you need

This is the tricky part, as you don’t want to regret throwing away anything that might later come in useful. However, here are some general rules.

– If the item in question has been gathering dust for years, then you probably have no need for it

– It is broken, or in a state of ill-repair, it’s probably not worth keeping.

– If you have a duplicate of the item, then one is probably surplus to requirements.

Gather these items together, alongside anything you are considering keeping, and then work out your next move.

Create three separate piles

For each pile (or storage box), there are three things to keep in mind.

Should I keep it?

Should I throw it away?

Should I sell or donate the item?

By putting each item in the corresponding pile, you will then simplify the process. Of course, you might also want to make a separate pile for anything you are unsure about.

Take the next step

For the items you are definitely going to keep, you can put them to one side ready to pack into your moving boxes. Be sure not to pack everything too early, however, as there are certain items you might need before the move, including any important pieces of paperwork that are needed for contacting your utility companies.

For the items you are going to throw away, be responsible. Some items will be recyclable, so dispose of them properly. Similarly, certain items will be hazardous, such as batteries and old cell phones, so research where to get rid of these things online. And for anything else, throw away the smaller items and contact your local rubbish removal company to collect any heavier items.

For those items that are worth something, donate them to your local charity shop, or give them to people you know who might be in need. Alternatively, use websites such as eBay, Amazon, Craigslist, and Facebook to sell anything that might net you a bit of extra cash, being sure to value certain items first just in case you have rare or collectible items that could net you a fortune.

And if in doubt, don’t do anything rash. You don’t need to worry too much about keeping smaller items for now, but for bulkier items, use websites such as https://onthegomoving.com/how-to-find-the-best-temporary-storage-units-in-your-area/, and put them in storage. This way, you will have less to worry about on moving day, and you can take your time when deciding what to do with them.
