Stop Stressing About The Little Things

There are so many little things that are absolutely amazing at lifting our spirits. The sharp scent of lemons, seeing kids jumping in muddy puddles, stroking a soft-furred tail-wagger and so much more. It’s amazing. However, there is another side to the coin and one that means there are plenty of little things that can get you stressed in a second. These things are the worst, especially if they’re the kind that can’t be avoided no matter how good you are at sidestepping stuff.

Your boss is on the warpath for no apparent reason, your family is getting on top of each other because the weather is horrendous, your luggage got lost on the way back from a horrendous business trip – there are so many reasons why your stress levels are rising and bringing a bunch of wrinkles with them.

But while these little stress-makers might feel unavoidable, there are certain things you can do to make them easier to handle. There are certain things you can do to make these lemons and turn them into scented candles. Take up yoga, listen to classical music, take a walk, fill your house with houseplants, embrace the smell of home-baked biscuits and pop rosemary into your flower arrangements. There are so many ways you can overcome those moments of stress.

That said, the best thing you can do to overcome the little stress-makers is put them into perspective. The reason for this is simple: they are small. It’s just about taking a few deep breaths and wondering whether these things will still matter in a year’s time or even a month. Trust us, most of the time, they won’t. Try and think back to the little things that got you stressed last year and you probably won’t even remember being stressed.

Nonetheless, it’s always helpful to know which little things get people clenching their fists so that you can spot them and avoid them.

1. Oh, Now I’m Hangry

Snickers have built their entire marketing campaign off the back of hunger pains. And they were right to because nothing can derail your great day faster than a sudden burst of tummy grumbling, especially when you’re sat somewhere with no visible food within arms reach. Luckily, the solution is as simple as 1 + 1. You just need to get into the habit of having an emergency snack on you at all times and replenishing this stock the moment you chow down on it. Have a breakfast bar in your bag, a bag of nuts in your car, a bunch of chocolate bars in your desk drawer, anywhere you find yourself getting marooned without a snack for lengthy periods of time.

2. The Big Buffer Bar

OMG! It may be a first world problem, but nothing is more annoying than settling down after a day of stressful meetings with your bosses than getting home in the hopes of relaxing only to find your Netflix won’t work because your internet is playing up. All you want to do is stay up late, watching an unhealthy amount of New Girl episodes with a big bucket of ice cream without it having to load up every twelve seconds. Thankfully, there is a solution: pick an internet provider with better internet speeds, something that will suit your needs, which means popping onto www.Optimum.com and seeing exactly what you need. It could be something that only needs to keep four devices running at their best, or it might be that there are a bunch of you in your apartment and so you’re looking at twelve-plus devices. Whatever it is, go above and beyond so that those stressful days aren’t topped off by something as simple as a bad New Girl experience.

3. Dreadful Deadlines Happen

We’ve all been there. We’ve all been getting ready to leave the office after one totally rubbish day only to be caught at the door by your manager and told you need to have such and such on their desk by 9.30am tomorrow. It’s absurd. No. It’s impossible. There is no way you can do what is asked in the time you’ve been given, which means both you and your boss are going to get stressed. Well, first things first, take that deep breath and try not to panic. We know that is sucky advice, but panicking will only worsen the situation (and worsen your wrinkles faster than a bad night’s sleep). Instead, take another deep breath and then think about what your line manager has just asked of you. You’ll find there are some things you definitely can’t do in that time, but there are some things you will be able to. The trick is getting a clear idea of what’s what and then communicating that to those above, or those you’re working with. You can’t do any more than you best. Ever. Accept that and accept everything else is out of your control and thus not worth thinking about.

4. Social Media Lies

This is the most modern stress-maker of them all. It’s getting to the bathroom, pulling out your phone, scrolling through social media and getting quietly enraged by how perfect everyone else’s lives are. It’s horrendous. It’s a slap in the face. It’s stressful. But it’s also easy to avoid and it starts with a healthy dollop of realisation because no one’s life is perfect. No one. Sure, their social media may look heavenly, but this is their highlight reel, so there is no point comparing it to your behind-the-scenes footage. Of course, that’s not the only thing you can do. You can also change your habits because, if you’re getting stressed every time you go onto Instagram, something has got to be changed. That could be as drastic as deleting the app completely, stop logging on as much, logging out every time you do go on or just changing who you follow so that you curate a healthier feed. Whatever is going to help you stop getting stressed out by the falsified and filtered photos of those you know and those you just follow.
