Becoming a mother is the single biggest privilege we will ever experience in our lifetime, and from the moment our baby looks into our eyes for the first time, we have a new love which will last a lifetime. When it comes to motherhood, it can be incredibly intimidating being a new mom, and you will have people from every direction of your life giving you advice and tips which aren’t always helpful. You are going to be a fantastic mother, and here are our top tips for new moms which you need to know.

Live in the moment

It can be easy as a new mom to get wrapped up in schedules and jobs and you will often find yourself thinking more about what you are doing later on in the week than what you are doing right now. You should be able to enjoy this time in your life, and these first few months will be the perfect time to bond with your new child. Relax, live in the moment and take every challenge as it comes. Make sure that you enjoy this time of your life because it is one which you will always remember.

Relax about food

Imagine the most fussy eater you know, and now imagine that they can’t communicate what they want to eat and when they want to eat it… that’s what a baby is like. Feeding your baby is obviously an important part of motherhood but don’t get too stressed out if it doesn’t go to plan. You might want to feed your child first thing in the morning but they might want to wait until later in the day. Just take it as it comes and feed them when they are hungry. It will involve some odd hours but that’s what having a baby is all about.

Get bedtime in check

One of the things you will need to do as a new mom is make sure that your child has a strict nighttime routine and that they go to sleep at the same time every night. Although it is unlikely that they will sleep through the night, you will notice it becomes easier to get your baby to sleep at night when they have a routine to stick to. It will give you time to recharge and relax before you go to sleep and it will help keep you and the baby happy and healthy.

Learn to say no

From the moment you tell the world you are having a baby, you will not go through a single day without people telling you what you should be wearing, eating, drinking and doing. Once you finally give birth it will just get even worse and you will find yourself wishing that no one knew you had a baby at all. It is important as a mother to learn to say no. If people give you advice which you don’t believe is right for your baby, don’t take it. You are a mother now and you are the only one who knows what is best for your child. Be strong and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Make traditions from the start

When you have a baby it is finally time to make all of your daydreams into a reality and this will include the way you spend your days, how you celebrate special occasions and how you tell stories to your baby at night. Start creating little traditions in your family from day one such as having a family movie night once a month under a blanket fort… celebrating birthdays with a special breakfast and fun activities, and dressing up as a character when telling your child bedtime stories. Any small tradition you can make with your child will improve your relationship and it will be these moments which you all remember for years to come.

Be prepared for illness

Children are incredibly vulnerable in their early years, and even the slightest mention of the word ‘cold’ can have them sniffling for days on end. You will be battling a lot of the time with questions like is my baby supposed to be this warm? will my baby’s eczema improve or even disappear? Do I need to visit the hospital? Just remember that children will always get sick, and sickness is a way for your baby to build up immunity to diseases. It won’t be pleasant and it can be hard sometimes to bear, but it is natural and your baby will become stronger because of it. Just make sure you are always prepared with big blankets, lots of hot drinks and medicine.

Know your baby

After spending nine months in your womb you will feel as if you know your baby better than anyone, but the moment they are born things will change and you have to start a clean slate. Take the time every day to get to know your baby. How they smile, the way they ask for food and those little quirks that make them unique. This will allow you to get to know your child and tailor your parenting to them specifically.

Make friends

When you become a mother it can feel very much like you are isolated and you can become a little bit of a recluse in your home. However it is important even with a baby to be able to get out of the house and catch up with your friends. When you are having a bad day you need people to vent to, and maintaining a strong relationship with your friends is the best way to do it. Keep in touch even if it’s only on the phone, and you will be much happier as a new mom.

Be a role model

You are going to have to become the person you want your child to be when they grow up. As a parent you are a role model to your baby and they will look to you and your partner for whatever they need in life. Make sure you show your child how to be compassionate, how to love and how to be an open person in life. It will guide them and shape who they become.
