Being a parent is all about making big decisions. It’s your choices in life that have a major effect on your kids growing up, and how they go through their existence. It can be pressurising in this respect, making big decisions, especially when it comes to the overall quality of life for your kids. But while you can run yourself into the ground with worry, trusting your gut is a far better approach, not just in parenting, but in life. Why should we learn to trust our gut when making parental decisions?

Your Gut Instinct Comes From Past Experience

The more experience you have in a specific area of life, the more qualified you are to make the right decision. It’s something we shouldn’t ignore, our gut instinct, but they are signs in the world that can give us a right of way. Whether you are superstitious or not, or believe in serendipity and things happening for a reason, there can be signs you need to pay attention to, especially if you are of a spiritual nature. Look at Readings With Matt’s article on 444, if you see the number 4 everywhere, you could treat this as a sign that you need to listen to your intuition. This is the 4th meaning of 444, and where does your intuition come from? Your gut instinct. While you are looking for signs that you’re doing a good job with your kids, you could ask other people, but make sure that you have the final say. A lot of people don’t necessarily know what is the best course of action for you, and while we can focus on signs that are guiding the way, trusting our gut, based on our past experiences, is a effective way forward.

Your Gut Instinct Is A Part Of You

From a physiological perspective, the body and mind are connected. On top of this, your spirit or personality, in conjunction with your body and mind, form your entire being. In fact, your intuition is encoded into your brain. So when you think about something like making a decision, if your instinct is overriding your moral compass in the mind, then it feels right. If it feels right, then you should go for it, whatever your problem is. And while your gut instinct is a part of you, when you are forging a relationship with your children, your instinct is a very good barometer as whether something is right or wrong with your child. Very simply, when you are making a decision and it feels right, it will feel good, you will be excited and courageous. But if it’s not the right decision, you will feel fearful.

It Really Is A Gut Feeling

When you feel butterflies in your stomach , this is due to the subconscious part of the brain sending signals to the nerves in your stomach. Some people ignore their gut feelings, and choose to make decisions with their mind, even if their intuition is telling them the opposite. But it’s important to remember that, as everything is connected in your body, the gut feelings you experience are not something to be ignored.

So should we trust our gut feeling when we are making difficult decisions? It’s a topic very much up for debate, but you need to remember that your intuition is a subconscious process. A good example of how your subconscious works with regards to making a decision is when you list the pros and cons of a specific decision, go to bed, and then wake up with the answer. Your subconscious has done this for you, and when emotions get thrown into the mix, fear and anxiety can cloud your judgement. Instead, it’s much better for us to check in with ourselves and see how we are feeling. Because intuition is neither positive nor negative as far as emotions are concerned, it makes for a very logical thought process.

So, if you ever have a difficult decision to make, it can be pressurising to pick the right decision. Instead, keep calm, focus, and go into yourself. Make sure you check in with your body and your mind and see if they are both on the same page. Because a major decision with regards to our children’s future can be overwhelming,  it’s important to think about how your gut is feeling about it, and therefore, your subconscious. It’s very easy to go through what your brain is considering, but when it comes to making parental decisions, you need to learn to trust your gut.
