Here’s What Aging Actually Does to Your Hair

Graying gets all the attention because it’s obvious. Basically, one day there’s a silver strand, and suddenly it’s a whole moment. Well, nowadays, even with the best hair care routine, it’s still not too uncommon to begin graying in your 20s, and then it kicks up a little more in your 30s, and well, you get the idea here. But hair changes with age in a bunch of other ways too, and honestly, those changes can feel more annoying than the color shift. Well, you know about the graying, and so it basically makes everything else feel like one giant surprise.

Because at least with grays, there’s a clear explanation. With everything else, it can feel like, why is the same routine not working, why does the hair look flatter, and why does it feel like it has less patience for literally anything? Well, a lot of questions, as you can see, and all justifiable, obviously.

Hair Can Get Finer without Looking Like “Hair Loss”

But this doesn’t make any sense, though? How is that even possible? Well, hair can get finer over time, even when there’s still a decent amount of it. So someone isn’t necessarily seeing bald patches, but the ponytail feels thinner, the ends look wispier, and volume disappears faster than it used to. You probably get the idea now. So, maybe you have a go-to haircut you always get from your stylist, well, is it starting to look a little more disappointing? Is that blowout just flattening in an hour? Are heavy products not working either? Well, it’s sad to say, but this is all normal, and your hair is changing.

Your Part Starts Looking Wider

If you’ve had a child, then you might remember during postpartum that part getting wider during the postpartum hair loss, right? Well, this is a whole new level. A widening part is one of those things that can mess with confidence because it’s subtle at first. It’s not like hair falls out in one day; it’s more like a slow shift where one day someone notices the scalp more than they used to. And for women, this can feel extra frustrating because hair thinning is still treated like a men-only issue in casual conversation, when, yeah, sure, women deal with it all the time.

But you’re not doing anything wrong; it’s genetics, hormones, stress, diet, your age, those sorts of things do play a pretty big role. You could consider Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), as a lot of people will look into this procedure to get the hair back they used to have, so that could even be an option for you, too. But this isn’t for everyone, of course, but you could see a dermatologist instead, as they might be able to offer some help as well.

Your Hair Can Get More Fragile

A lot of people assume thinning means the hair is falling out at the root, but breakage is a huge part of what makes hair look less full. But what’s going on here, though? Well, as hair ages, it can get drier and more fragile. Meaning that the scalp often produces less oil, the hair shaft can feel rougher, and the lengths start snapping off more easily, especially if heat styling is frequent or the hair gets pulled tight.

So it’s best to avoid pulling, focus on hydration, and just try to avoid heat, and yeah, that goes for hot water too.
