Is Your Home Extension Safe?

Your home extension has been a big project, and you’re very excited to get to use it, and settle into having more space and freedom in your home! But before you do that, you need to make sure that your new extension is safe to use. After all, there could be a whole host of problems with the work done, for a variety of reasons, and it’s a good idea to double check before you move in too fast. So, without further ado, here are the most necessary questions to ask yourself about the home improvements you’ve recently carried out.

Did You Use the Right Materials?

First, did you use a professional renovation company, and if so, did they use the materials they know best to construct your extension? Because if not, there’s a good chance the work will be a little shoddy (and much more expensive than you were expecting!), and that simply isn’t safe for your household.

This doesn’t have to be the company’s fault either; they simply followed your wishes, but if they told you from the start they weren’t sure about the products you’d chosen, it’s a good idea to get a second opinion from someone who does know them.

Did You Skimp on the Budget?

If you did skimp on the budget a little, or you’ve still got a few jobs on the to do list to complete, it’s a good idea to stay away from using the extension until everything has been squared away. After all, if you’ve had something like a basement converted, and you’ve not looked into using local Basement Waterproofing Companies to insulate the room from the pressures of the building above, you’ll be living with a very precarious safety hazard.

The budget for your home improvement always needs to have a bit of wiggle room in it. You need to be able to fork out for emergency work, if necessary, and to have the builders come back to make a few changes here and there. As a good rule, work out what’s going to be most expensive ahead of time, and always have a good 20% of your savings left over when the work is ‘done’.

Did You Follow All Safety Precautions?

And finally, during your extension’s construction period, did you follow all necessary safety precautions? Even just starting at the wrong time of the year can make the work slow to proceed and a lot more costly than you needed it to be.

Most of all, did you ensure the site was always clear for the team to use, meaning no unqualified individuals were around? If not, who knows what kind of rubbish could have gotten into the mix? You could end up with a bad, unidentifiable smell or a bad dust build up at some point – that’s not good for anyone!

Your home extension might not be safe to use yet. Make sure you carry out some essential checks before you settle in properly!
