Classic Styles: How to Make Your Decor Timeless

A home that is designed to stand the test of time will always look beautiful – no matter how the trends fluctuate.

While the 70’s fashion with its large flowers and brown backgrounds quickly became associated with something rather ugly, a classic style would have looked just as great in this decade as it would have during the Victorian era.

Here is a handful of tips on how to give your living room, bedroom, kitchen or even bathroom that elegant look that never goes out of fashion. That way, you can simply lean back into your cream colored couch pillow and let time roll on.

First: Go for simple lines

Back in the 70’s, you might have seen college girls wear flowery dresses that looked like they were made out of somebody’s old curtains. In all fairness, it’s quite likely that they actually used to be curtains at one point since it was common to make your old clothes back then – but you should try to think about your clothing fashion and interior design style the same way.

A classic and timeless dress, for example, is usually in one consistent color, made with simple lines, and of a high quality. The same should be said about your curtains, blinds, roller shades, or whatever you use to shield your home from the eyes of prying neighbors.

Place your curtains slightly higher than the window to make the room look taller, keep the fabric light and airy, and avoid succumbing to new trends.

Next: Go for wood

Durability and quality beat everything when it comes to timeless decor. Wood, in particular, is not going to go out of fashion anytime soon – and by combining a beautiful dark wooden floor with off-white walls, you’ll achieve a perfectly elegant look.

Utilize natural fabrics as much as possible, such as cotton, stones, brick, and wood to get the kind of look that will always be in fashion.

Mix old and new

Another way to make your home effortlessly timeless is to invest in a few antique pieces. Nothing else is, after all, a better proof that it can stand the test of time than authentically antique pieces. The trick is to only have a few of them and balance it out with crisp, white shades and clean lines.

If you go overboard in one way or the other, your home won’t be able to look as balanced and elegant as it could have been. Emphasize clean lines, above all, neutral colors, and strive to keep your home as neat and tidy as possible.
